THE Phenomenon of phone addiction

 THE Phenomenon of phone addiction

Written by: Dr. Adel Reda

In my medical clinic, I noticed the inability of a large segment of teenage patients to engage in normal social interaction regarding their cases, as well as their “obsession” with their smartphones, even while they were under routine medical evaluation.

I remembered this issue when the British state announced a study of a draft decision to ban smartphones for those under 16 years of age. It is clear that such a study came as a result of the explosion of societal, educational, and personal problems there, noting the increase in the amount of damage and harm caused by children’s use of smartphones.

The simplest example we have is the increase in the rate of child suicide after the year 2010 from zero percent to ten percent?! This year is special because it coincided with the year in which the use of smart phones and the spread of social media began, but the issue needs serious attention to be studied by specialists to determine if this phenomenon is related to phones or other factors.

So, this British study to prevent and prohibit the use of smartphones is a “solution” to a deep problem that exists among them, noting the negative impact on the ground and noting the increase in addiction to smartphones and social media, similar to drug addiction! And alcohol! And smoking! On the psychological side, noting its harm to the health side, as well as the moral side!? As the “smart phone” and social media have become one of the tools for “guidance” and “brainwashing” and programming the fall towards deviations and anomalies from everything that is normal, and the danger with children increases as it is difficult for them to “distinguish” between what is wrong and what is right and also their “social formation.” “Psychologically, it occurs at the beginning of their lives.

Hence we say: Such a British decision must, as “Kuwaitis,” study the possibility of implementing it in our country to protect our society and our children from such negatives and harms. Here comes the role of the government and parliament to take action on the ground of implement
